Songwriter / singer John Parkes previously played with indie guitar rock heroes (and night time Radio One favourites) Fuzzbird, Greenhouse, The Chorus and the Sinister Cleaners He now fronts Leeds based Whole Sky Monitor. The irreplaceable John Peel played something from every record John made over a period of 14 years and introduced various other DJs to his songs. John has 'gone acoustic' (the 'reverse Dylan' manoeuvre) which isn't such a great change since most of his around 200 songs have been written on acoustic guitar. The songs are not indie rock without a band and they are probably not folk songs. 'A little like Loudon Wainwright III with fewer jokes' seems to come reasonably close, though there are no influences worn on the sleeve. Lyrical obsessions include love, longing, lust, religion, bits of politics, self examination, the meaning of life, TV, general angst and touches of black humour. John plays acoustic venues across England. Other biographical stuff: (Please see the biog page for a long biography) John worked for The Wedding Present (including guest spots on TV, encores and Peel sessions) for a number of years. He also worked for the Ukrainians as well as being proud to change guitar strings for Buffalo Tom for a week or two once. Some band recordings played by the great John Peel on BBC Radio One were solo projects with the addition of various drummer friends, notably Simon Smith the Wedding Present's long-term drummer.
